Peter Aghimien
first term ending June 2010 - first year Education and Work Peter Aghimien earned a baccalaureate degree from The Ohio State University; master's and doctorate degrees from Louisiana Tech University. He holds professional accountant licenses from American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, and Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria. He has engaged in a variety of consulting activities, primarily in the areas of accounting, banking, and international business. A previous Fulbright Scholar and also honored as an Outstanding Accounting Educator by the Indiana CPA Society, Peter previously taught at Grambling State University, Tennessee State University, and Ahmadu Bello University. He has received several teaching, research, and service awards. Peter is currently Professor and Chair of Accounting at Indiana University South Bend. FAMILY Peter was born in Nigeria and he is married to Mabel Aghimien who is a Clinical Therapist at Madison Center and Hospitals. They are the proud parents of Maro, Efe, and Uyi, who coincidentally are all Accountants. Mabel and Peter are also blessed with a grandson, Mason. Burgess is a native of Bronx, New York. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, where he majored in International Studies and Spanish. He currently holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Indiana University and is in pursuit of a Masters in Business Administration from the same institution. Duquoin has gained over 5 years in retail management experience which was derived from working for some of the industry’s top brands. He has lived in Atlanta and Chicago prior to his relocation to South Bend in 2003. While returning to school to further his education, Duquoin worked for South Bend Community School Corporation in a variety of roles on a part time basis. In 2004, he decided to change career fields and joined the automotive industry and AM General in the Business Development Group which focused on managing and growing new commercial business for the company. In 2006 he joined the Government Contracts Management Department which focuses on the contracting and negotiating end of building and supplying military vehicles to the government in support of our troops. Family and Interests Duquoin loves to read, write and travel, spend time with family and is an active member of his church. He is the proud father of Andrew, currently a second grader at The Montessori Academy. Duquoin is truly dedicated in his role as a member of the Board of Trustees and is very excited in the direction of the academy under new leadership and a very innovative board. After receiving her undergraduate degree in Sociology, she went on to attend Notre Dame Law School where she served as Articles Editor for the Notre Dame Law Review. Following graduation, she served as a law clerk to the Honorable Kenneth F. Ripple of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and continued her legal career at Baker & Daniels, where she focused her practice on labor and employment litigation. In 2000, she returned to the service of the court as a permanent law clerk to Judge Ripple. That same year, she returned to Notre Dame Law School as an adjunct faculty member teaching Deposition Techniques. Volunteer Activities Kari’s involvement with TMA began in 1997, the year her oldest daughter, Gracie, enrolled in the pre-school program. Prior to joining the Board in 2006, she volunteered in the classroom, chaired the Annual Giving campaign with her husband, Jerry, and served on the Head of School Search Committee. Family Kari and Jerry live in Granger with their three children. Their two oldest children, Gracie and Katie, have attended The Montessori Academy since pre-school and now are enrolled in the Junior High program. Their son, Declan, born in 2007, looks forward to following in his sisters’ footsteps. (Bio updated August 2007) Annie Geary President, Board of Trustees Second term ending June 2009 - Second year Education B.A. Psychology, University of Notre Dame 1991 Employment and Volunteer Activities I have worked in the Development Office at the University of Notre Dame since 1997. I was an administrative assistant for a regional director when I began my development career. In 2002 I assumed the role of Assistant Director of the Annual Fund, working in the student phone center. When the Office of Principal Gifts was established, I returned to an administrative assistant position in that office in the fall of 2003. I was born and raised in Cincinnati where I attended a Montessori school. I moved to South Bend 10 years ago after a brief stop in Milwaukee. My volunteer activities include service projects with the Notre Dame Alumni Club of Milwaukee, Habitat for Humanity of St. Joseph County, and the TMA Advancement Committee. I was honored to be chosen as a TMA board member in 2003. Family My daughter Charlotte (Charlie) is a seventh grader. She has attended TMA since she was three years old. She enjoys volleyball, basketball and playing trumpet in the TMA band. My husband Kevin was not familiar with the Montessori method when we first enrolled Charlie, but watching her mature as a student and a person has convinced him that we could not have made a better choice for her education. She has grown more confident in herself each year, and for that we are thankful for all the wonderful people at TMA who have been a part of her development. (Bio updated July 2007) valerie harley First term ending 2010 - First year Education and Work Valerie Harley moved to Granger, Indiana in January of 2005 from Schaumburg, IL. Valerie has over 20 years experience in the Library/Information Technology field and has held positions in academic, pubic, and county libraries. She earned her B.A. in Social Sciences from DePaul University in 1989 and her Master’s in Library and Information Science (MILS) from the University of Michigan in 1990. Family Valerie is married to Dr. Bruce Harley, an emergency medicine physician. Their son Jonathan (age 7) will begin second grade at TMA the fall 2007-08 school year. D. in Chinese history, with distinction, from the University of California, Berkeley in 1992 and has taught at Washington University, Whitman College, Oklahoma State University, the University of Pennsylvania, and the University of Colorado at Denver. He is currently Associate Professor and Chair of East Asian Languages and Literatures and Concurrent Associate Professor of History at the University of Notre Dame. He is the author and editor of four books, one of which, Manufacturing Confucianism: Chinese Traditions and Universal Civilization, was recognized by the American Academy of Religion in 1998 as the Best First Book in the History of Religions. He has been cited for teaching excellence at two universities and is included in Whos Who among Americas Teachers (2000, 2002) and was named one of the 2000 Outstanding Scholars of the Twentieth Century. His credits range from presentations and papers on a wide variety of topics on traditional and contemporary China, to numerous articles, book chapters, encyclopedia entries, and reviews. (Bio updated July 2007) david mctigue first term ending 2010 - first year mary good palmer First term ending June 2009 - second year Mary Good Palmer was born and raised in South Bend, IN. Her education began in the 3 – 6 program at South Bend Montessori School on Leer Street. She graduated from Saint Matthew Cathedral School and Marian High School then earned her B.A. in English Literature from Saint Mary’s College in 1996. Upon graduation from Saint Mary’s, Mary moved to Chicago to pursue a career in publishing. In 2004 she, along with her husband, Mike, and daughter, Ruthie, returned to South Bend to be nearer to family. That fall Ruthie began the Toddler Program at TMA. Since then the Palmers have added two more Montessorians, Jacob and Annie, to their family. Jacob will begin TMA’s Toddler Program in Fall 2007. Currently, Mary’s primary focus is her family, but she also works on a contract basis as an Editor-at-Large for Kaplan Publishing, which publishes both test preparation guides as well as business books found in retail bookstores. Mary is an active member of The Junior League of South Bend and is especially pleased to have the opportunity to serve the TMA community as a trustee.
