Dear Montessori Family,
Hello and Welcome… to the most surreal school year I have ever encountered. I have to guess the same is true for you. Our intention continues to be to welcome you back to an open campus on August 24th of 2020. As restrictions around the country continue to be lifted, we are seeing increasing cases of COVID-19 in many places as well as here in the Midwest. Those increases in infections and the upcoming school year have led some teachers to protest the reopening of schools in areas around the country. Understandably so. We are all cognizant and wary of the risks. |
It is important to note that TMA does not have the same challenges as the public schools in our area, and around the country, around which we’re seeing the understandable fear of teachers and parents in deciding what’s best for themselves and their families. But while we have a campus that can much better handle a safe return to classes, the data continues to change and we are watching it closely. Recently released guidelines from the St. Joseph County Department of Health gives us parameters around which we can make informed decisions. And we will make decisions about reopening and remaining open based on those guidelines, even if the state does not mandate a direction. Should we have to close, we will be ready on day one to provide our students with the best remote learning opportunities we can offer, just as our wonderful teachers did last spring.
Here at TMA, the wellbeing of our children and our staff is always foremost in our thinking. There will be changes but with protocols in place for cleaning and hygiene, masks and physical distancing, and adhering to a cohort model for classrooms, I believe we are as well or better positioned than any school in our area to be able to offer our students and families a rich school experience, with minimal disruptions. Most importantly, to make it work, it will take coordination, understanding and commitment from all of us.
We continue to be here for you and we look forward to having you back. With protocols in place for your safe return, and a little bit of luck, it will be the week of August 24th. One way or another, we will get through this together.
Sincerely,
Randy Kelly
Head of School
